The Empty Room

How to Turn an Empty Room into a Packed Audience

I showed up at the Legion yesterday for a St. Paddy’s afternoon set. It started off slow—just one table in the back and a few skeptical looks. One guy even joked that I was "too big to be a leprechaun."

Instead of taking it personally, I improvised a song about it on the spot. The ice broke immediately.

As the place started filling up, I stopped playing at them and started playing with them. I asked for names, wrote songs on the fly, and made it personal. The result? By the end of the night, it felt like the whole crowd had shown up just to see me.

The Bottom Line: If you don’t bring a following with you, create one while you’re there. Make it intimate, reach out, and don't be afraid to engage. That’s when the magic happens.
